A New Wing for the Ancient Capital: The Technological Symphony of Center Int and Xi'an Xianyang International Airport Terminal 5
Time: 2025-12-30

On February 20, 2025, the T5 terminal of Xi'an Xianyang International Airport officially commenced operations. As China's first super passenger terminal designated with the "T5" code, this monumental 700,000-square-meter structure has become a new aerial gateway connecting the ancient capital of Xi'an to the world.

The third-phase expansion project of Xi'an Xianyang International Airport is a key national construction project under China's 14th Five-Year Plan, a national civil aviation "benchmark demonstration project" supported by the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and the top-priority civil aviation development project designated by the Shaanxi Provincial Party Committee and Government. The T5 terminal is a core component of this major undertaking.

Center Int participated in the construction of this pivotal project, contributing its strength to the completion of this "Aerial Silk Road." It is noteworthy that in the 2024 "Building Waterproofing Industry Science and Technology Award – Engineering Technology Award (Jinyu Award – Metal Cladding System Engineering)" selection, this very project was honored with the Gold Award.

The design of Terminal 5 draws inspiration from the urban planning layout of the ancient capital Chang'an and the architectural imagery of the Hanyuan Hall in the Tang Dynasty's Daming Palace. It ingeniously incorporates the ancient architectural element of the "triple-eave" roof. This is manifested in the "split opening" skylight of the main building and its sculptural eaves, which, combined with modern floodlighting technology, creates a magnificent visual effect. Throughout the construction process, Center Int strictly adhered to this design philosophy. By employing advanced building technologies and materials, the company ensured that while the terminal achieves a grand and imposing scale, its details reveal meticulous craftsmanship.

Center Int provided a comprehensive metal roofing system solution with a total area of 260,000 square meters for key areas including Terminal 5, the South and North Piers, and the GTC (Ground Transportation Center).

The solution features the proven 66H Wind Uplift Resistant & Leak-Proof Roof System, with an exceptional wind uplift resistance capability of -12 kPa, a system previously and successfully applied at the Beijing Daxing International Airport. This system delivers outstanding performance in waterproofing, thermal insulation, fire resistance, and durability, providing safe and reliable protection for the terminal and effectively ensuring the airport's stable operation.

The project management team and construction crew worked in close collaboration with efficient coordination, ensuring the project's successful completion within the demanding schedule, which earned widespread acclaim.

As Northwest China's largest aviation hub project, the third-phase expansion of Xi'an Xianyang International Airport has embedded green and low-carbon principles from the initial planning and design stages, with forward-looking deployment in renewable energy utilization.

A key innovation is the adoption of the Hi-MO BIPV product ("Longding") from the LONGi-Senter partnership on the roofs of the Ground Transportation Center (GTC) and the parking structure. As a premier green building material, "Longding" integrates the advantages of safety and reliability, high-efficiency power generation, stable returns, and worry-free operation. It achieves seamless architectural integration while offering exceptional performance in waterproofing, corrosion resistance, fire resistance, typhoon resilience, and low power degradation. This ensures the safety, reliability, and long-term durability of both the roof and the photovoltaic system for over 25 years.

The project has a total installed capacity of approximately 1.15 MW, covering a rooftop area of about 6,000 square meters. The application of the "Longding" BIPV system supplies clean electricity for the terminal's daily operations, significantly reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and lowering carbon emissions at their origin.

This initiative aligns perfectly with the "Four Characteristics Airport" development goal, specifically the construction of a green airport. It aids in creating a low-energy-consumption, green terminal demonstration project while substantially enhancing energy utilization efficiency. This actively contributes to China's efforts in achieving its "dual carbon" goals.

Center Int has always adhered to the principle that "technological innovation is the primary productive force." Guided by the corporate mission of "creating a better working and living environment for humanity and society," we are dedicated to providing clients with high-quality architectural solutions. Our participation in the Xi'an Xianyang International Airport's third-phase expansion project is not only a demonstration of Center Int's capabilities but also a firm commitment to the future development of green buildings and smart cities.

Moving forward, Center Int will continue to be driven by innovation and grounded in quality, propelling global airport construction toward a greener and more sustainable development path. We will contribute the power of Center Int to more iconic projects!
